Age Calculator

Calculate age from birth date in years, days, or hours.

What is Age Calculator?

Age calculator computes exact age from a birth date, showing years, months, and days.

Features

  • Exact age in years, months, days
  • Total days lived
  • Next birthday countdown

Use Cases

  • Personal age tracking
  • Form validation
  • Birthday reminders

An age calculator converts a birth date and an optional cutoff date into a floor-based span: whole years, then months and leftover days derived from mean-year constants, alongside raw day and hour totals. It fits form fields, eligibility rules, tenure and retirement cutoffs, where a reviewer needs a single number rather than a calendar story.

The 365.25 and 30.44 divisors behind the labels

The year field is Math.floor(days / 365.25), where 365.25 is the Julian year that absorbs one leap day in four. The remainder then goes through Math.floor((days % 365.25) / 30.44) for months and a second modulo for leftover days. Those two constants do not tile: 30.44 multiplied by 12 is 365.28, slightly larger than 365.25, so the month field can never reach 12 and leftover days can reach 30. The visible effect is that a genuine 25th birthday, 9131 days from 2001-03-15 to 2026-03-15, prints as 24 years, 11 months, 30 days. Anniversaries align only when the day total sits at or just above a multiple of 365.25: 1995-07-04 to 2026-07-04 is 11323 days, a quarter day past 31 times 365.25, and reads clean.

Date-only parsing, and where the hour total comes from

Both fields are native date inputs, so the values arrive as bare YYYY-MM-DD. The component feeds them to new Date(value), and date-only strings are parsed as 00:00 UTC, which is why two filled date fields always differ by an exact multiple of 86400000 and the day count carries no rounding error. Leave the cutoff empty and new Date() supplies the current instant instead, time of day included: the hour figure Math.floor(diffMs / 3600000) then exceeds 24 times the day figure, and the day counter ticks over at 00:00 UTC, which is 08:00 in UTC+8 rather than local midnight. An end date before the birth date short-circuits into an error message; identical dates return zeros everywhere.

How it differs from a date diff and a timestamp

The neighbouring date calculator answers a gap in days and splits a range into weekday and weekend counts; this tool answers a person-scale span and reads the same milliseconds three ways: decomposed into years and months, as whole days, and as whole hours. The timestamp tool moves between epoch seconds and readable dates. Because the decomposition exists here and not there, this page is the right one for a stated age on a form, and the wrong one for a project deadline, where the calendar-aware gap and weekday split matter more. If a downstream system stores an epoch value, convert the birth date with the timestamp tool and keep the human-facing number from this one.

Worked example

A 25th birthday that reads as 24 years

Input
2001-03-15 → 2026-03-15
Output
24 years 11 months 30 days · 9131 days · 219144 hours

The span is exactly 25 calendar years, 9131 days, or 219144 hours. Dividing by 365.25 gives 24.9993, so the year field stops at 24; the 365-day remainder then splits into 11 months of 30.44 days plus 30 days, which is the maximum the leftover field can hold.

Limits and pitfalls

  • Years and months are mean-value arithmetic, not calendar arithmetic: 2001-03-15 to 2026-03-15 reports 24 years, 11 months, 30 days, so read the raw day count whenever the exact anniversary date is what gets checked.
  • Only dates are accepted: the birth instant is pinned to 00:00 UTC, and with the cutoff blank the day counter advances at 00:00 UTC, which for a UTC+8 user is 08:00 local time.
  • An end date earlier than the birth date is rejected with an error instead of a negative span; two identical dates return zeros rather than an empty result.
  • February 29 birthdays get no special case: 2016-02-29 to 2024-02-28 reports 7 years, because the year only increments once the day total crosses a multiple of 365.25.
  • There is no configured ceiling, so the practical limit is the ECMAScript Date range of 8.64e15 ms either side of 1970, about 100 million days.

When it goes wrong

"I pasted 15/03/2001 into the birth field and the panel stayed empty — not even an error."

CauseThe field is a native <input type="date">, whose value contract is RFC 3339 YYYY-MM-DD regardless of how the segments are displayed locally. Anything else — 15/03/2001, 2001/3/15, a half-typed day, or an impossible 2024-02-30 — is rejected by the browser and left as an empty string. The component then hits the if (!s) return null short-circuit before either validity check, so the result panel, error line included, is never rendered at all.

FixRetype or repaste as zero-padded ISO: 2001-03-15. When the panel is blank, suspect an empty field rather than an invalid date — the two invalid-date messages only fire on strings a date input can no longer produce.

"The button says Example (30 years ago), and the answer reads 29 years."

CauseThe button takes the current instant, subtracts 30 years, keeps the time of day, then slices toISOString() to ten characters. Across most date pairs 30 calendar years is 10957 days, while 30 × 365.25 = 10957.5, so Math.floor(days / 365.25) stops at 29. It prints 30 only when the window catches eight leap days — 1996-02-01 to 2026-02-01 is 10958 days. The UTC slice adds a second wobble: in UTC+8, clicking before 08:00 local stores yesterday, one day earlier, which lifts the total to 10958.

FixTreat the button as a smoke test, not an answer: type the real birth date, then read the day total. 10957 days genuinely falls short of 30 mean-years, so the year field is not lying to you.

"I had a cut-off date filled in, pressed the example button, and my cut-off was gone."

CauseloadExample() writes both inputs: it backdates the birth field by 30 years and assigns an empty string to toDateStr.value, clearing the second input. Every demo run therefore compares against the current instant, never against a cut-off you had chosen.

FixRe-enter the cut-off after pressing the button, and glance at the second field before reading the result — a blank cut-off answers "as of now", and that path also shifts the day count at 00:00 UTC rather than local midnight.

"My 11-month-old is shown as 0 years, but the form wants months."

CauseThe headline decomposes a day total with Math.floor(days / 365.25), so any span shorter than 365 days reads 0 years; a 341-day-old prints 0 years 11 months 6 days, and there is no top-level month figure anywhere in the panel. The unit labels are fixed strings (years, months, days, hours) with no pluralisation or unit switching, so "1 years" and "0 years" both appear verbatim.

FixWork from the day total: 341 days ÷ 30.44 = 11.2 months, or 8184 hours if the form wants hours. Under one year, report days and convert in the receiving system.

"I typed the deadline first and only get End date must be after birth date — I just want the gap between two dates."

CauseA single guard runs ahead of the arithmetic: if the second date is lower than the first in milliseconds, the computed returns an error string and nothing else. No negative span, no absolute gap, no hint about which field to change.

FixPut the earlier date in Birth date and the later one in End date. Both parse as 00:00 UTC, so the day and hour totals carry the right magnitude, and the years/months split is unchanged because it is derived from the absolute span, not from the direction of the subtraction.

One concrete scenario

Two days short of eight on an enrolment cut-off

A district enrols children by age on 31 August 2026; the child was born 2018-09-02. Enter the birth date and type 2026-08-31 into the second field instead of leaving it blank, because the blank field means "right now" and answers a different question. The panel returns 7 years 11 months 28 days, 2920 days, 70080 hours. Eight mean-years is 8 × 365.25 = 2922 days, so she sits 2 days short of the year field turning to 8; one day later, 2026-09-02, the total is exactly 2922 days and reads a clean 8 years 0 months 0 days. If the rule cuts by birth date, those 2 days keep her in the younger class: submit 2920 days, not the 7 from the headline.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between full age and traditional counting?
Full age (周岁) counts completed years since birth — what law, medicine, and documents use; traditional East Asian reckoning (虚岁) starts at 1 and adds at the new year. The tool computes full age precisely to the day, plus a countdown to the next birthday — use it for forms and applications.
How are birthdays on February 29 handled?
Convention treats March 1 (or February 28) as the birthday in common years, with jurisdictions differing. The tool resolves the next birthday against the actual calendar year, while total-days math is unaffected.
Does the birth timezone change the result?
This tool works on dates without time-of-day or timezone — the right model for birthdays, tenure, and anniversaries. For hour-precise "alive for" durations, use the timestamp tool instead.
